This documentary series, created in 1996, is still being used today as part of the school district's third grade curriculum. The video modules combine with classroom participation are a fun way to nurture a sense of local history and community pride.
The entire program was designed as 5 chapters each one running approximately 20 minutes. This allows for easy viewing during the regular class schedule with plenty of time left over for group discussion.
The project originally developed from a small grant given by the State of California to the Long Beach School District. I was approached by the president of the city's cable company to write and direct the program on a budget that wouldn't ordinarily pay for a good lunchbox. After some preliminary research on the historical scope of the project, I submitted a new proposal that incorporated music, songs, singing puppets and a narrative story line that would serve as a thread to tell the entire Long Beach story. The new proposal also required an increase in budget which the historical society accommodated.
The original video elements are currently being refurbished with enhanced picture and sound quality.
The above clip is an excerpt from the second module.
